Let’s make sure we all have the tools to stay connected with our local greenspaces! Whether you want to participate, stay informed, or understand city processes, here’s how you can get involved and make a difference.

Staying Informed & Getting Involved

Portland Parks Commission

The Portland Parks Commission oversees key decisions that impact our parks. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM, with agendas posted online. These meetings are an excellent way to stay updated on park management, events, and proposed changes.

  • Public Comment: Submit comments by emailing parkscommission@portlandmaine.gov by 12:00 PM the day before the meeting. Be sure to include your name, address, and the relevant agenda item.

  • Access Agendas & Minutes: Visit the Parks Commission webpage to review meeting agendas and minutes or sign up for meeting alerts.

City Council Meetings

Large events—like festivals in Payson Park—must be approved by the City Council if they are expected to draw 2,000+ attendees or last more than three days. City Council meetings are where these decisions are made, and they are open to public input.

  • When & Where: City Council meetings are held bi-weekly on Mondays at 5:00 PM at Portland City Hall. Check the City Council page for exact dates and times.

  • Public Participation: Residents can comment during public hearings or contact their city councilors in advance.

District Meetings

Annual District Meetings, usually held in the fall, provide a chance for residents to ask questions, share comments, and learn about important local issues, including updates on parks and community projects. Attending these meetings is a great way to engage directly with city officials and neighbors.
